I often have thoughts of work when trying to fall asleep at night. It is really kinda the pits because you know that its going to take you a good hour or two to finally settle down and actually fall asleep. Well, as fate would have it a few nights ago one of the things running through my mind was the fact that I own quite a few domain names.. I don’t have an exact count as they are spread across many registrars, but a good guess might be somewhere on the order of 400.
Just doing simple math tells you that I will have roughly $3200 in domain name renewal fees each year, and that also does not account for the fact that I constantly accumulate new ones as well.
Some I have a pretty good idea that I’ll never use, yet I continue to register them in the off chance that I may need it one day. Its really hard to get a domain name back once you’ve let it lapse because people will scoop it up and then try to ‘auction’ it back to you at a substantial price increase. In addition, how would you feel if you had an amazing domain name, let it lapse and then found out someone registered it and sold it for thousands of dollars. You’d be kicking yourself… so instead, you sit on it… in the off chance that you’ll need it one day.
It reminded me of the beer commercial… if you poke it, you own it. For life.
